Word onset Consonant+Vowel: Experiments on Finnish Syllable Structure
نویسندگان
چکیده
The most widely accepted view of the syllable-internal architecture is the rightbranching onset plus rime structure with the subsequent division of the rime into the vocalic nucleus and the coda. However, this view has not been uncontested in grammatical descriptions, as various other interpretations including flat structures and non-rightbranching hierarchical descriptions have also been proposed. Moreover, a number of psycholinguistic studies have shown that the onset plus rime structure may not be a universal processing unit either. The present results from two experimental paradigms and spontaneous slips of the tongue strongly suggest that Finnish speakers prefer the CV plus the remaining segments over the onset plus rime segmentation, both in on-line and off-line conditions

Syllable structure in Old, Middle and Modern Persian: A contrastive analysis
Evolution of languages has always been of interest to linguists. In this paper we study the natural progress of the syllable structure from Old Persian (O.P) to Middle Persian (Mi.P) and up to the Modern Persian (Mo.P). For this purpose all the words containing consonant sequences are collected from specific sources of each of these languages, and then analysed according to the syllab...
متن کاملWord segmentation in Persian continuous speech using F0 contour
Word segmentation in continuous speech is a complex cognitive process. Previous research on spoken word segmentation has revealed that in fixed-stress languages, listeners use acoustic cues to stress to de-segment speech into words. It has been further assumed that stress in non-final or non-initial position hinders the demarcative function of this prosodic factor. In Persian, stress is retract...
متن کاملSyllable-internal structure and the sonority hierarchy: differential evidence from lexical decision, naming, and reading.
Treiman (1983) and others have argued that spoken syllables are best characterized not as linear strings of phonemes, but as hierarchically organized units consisting of an onset (initial consonant or consonant cluster) and a rime (the vowel and any following consonants) and that the rime is further divided into a peak or nucleus (the vowel) and a coda (the final consonants). It has also been a...
متن کاملWord - final onsets *
A word-final consonant is standardly assumed to occupy a syllable coda. An alternative is to treat it as the onset of a syllable containing a phonetically unexpressed nucleus. The final-onset analysis is shown to out-perform the final-coda analysis on a range of phonological phenomena, including syllable typology, stress, vowel length, and consonant phonotactics. A constraint-based implementati...
متن کاملWord stress and duration in Finnish
The paper summarises results of an investigation of the durational correlates of word stress in Finnish, to be reported in more detail elsewhere. It was observed that segments and syllables have a reliably longer duration when they occur within the domain of the word’s first two morae than when they occur outside this domain. The most conspicuous concomitant of primary stress is the durational ...
